It’s no surprise that most of us are overworked, overwhelmed and overstressed. The Beat Goes On

The great American road trip – it’s an adventure unlike other in the world. And when you consider all the iconic places you can go just within the U.S., the list of sights, sounds, and flavors is nearly endless.

Growing up, my family would pack into our minivan every summer for a cross-country getaway, making stops along winding backroads to visit quirky roadside attractions and fill up on ice cream. I’ve never forgotten those road trips and what a blast they were. They made such an impression that they still inspire my own family’s journeys on the road, including our most recent excursion which had us dancing all the way from Nashville to Memphis to New Orleans on a musical odyssey. Of course, where there’s great music, you know there’s always great food!

MUSIC CITY

For country music lovers, there’s no other place to be than Nashville, also known as Music City. After all, it’s not only the beating heart of country music, it’s also become quite a magnet for all types of musicians and music ranging from pop and R&B to rock and bluegrass. Most importantly, this is where so many of America’s most storied musical artists recorded and launched their start.

Nashville is home of the iconic Grand Ole Opry, so plan spend a Friday or Saturday night here taking in some of the brightest new stars and legends of country music on the Opry’s classic stage. The Opry was started in 1925 when an announcer on a Nashville radio station introduced fiddle player Uncle Jimmy Thompson as the first performer on a new show called “The WSM Barn Dance.” 80 years later, the show is still going strong thanks to an ever-increasing fan base.

Music City is also home to the Country Music Hall of Fame, a museum that includes more than 2.5 million artifacts. Including among the collection are hundreds of historic musical instruments from country and bluegrass greats like Mother Maybelle Carter's Gibson L-5, Bob Wills' fiddle, Earl Scruggs's banjo, and Bill Monroe's mandolin. Of particular interest is the clothing worn by country artists like Jim Reeves's tuxedo jacket, Patsy Cline's cocktail dress, Hank Williams's Nudie suit, Johnny Cash's black suit from The Johnny Cash Show, and the famous red dress Reba McEntire wore during her performance on the 1993 CMA Awards.

When it comes to pairing great music with equally great food in Nashville, look no further than Pucketts Grocery and Live Music Venue. Along with an eclectic assortment of tables and chairs, and a diverse clientele, this Nashville institution serves a dining experience unlike any other while hosting live, local music with a huge side of Southern hospitality. On the menu are Southern favorites such as a fried green tomato BLT, slow-cooked BBQ, shrimp and grits, and more.

If you want maximize your time in Music City, consider staying a night or two. This will allow you plenty of time to experience all of Nashville’s highlights without being rushed. We’re big fans of the boutique Noelle Hotel Nashville, located downtown. This experiential hotel and creative gathering place incorporates an authentic and fun art-driven experience curated by leaders of Nashville’s thriving creative community.

ROCK ON!

Leaving Nashville, it’s time to head southwest on Interstate 40 to Memphis where along the way you can make a detour at the Loretta Lynn Ranch to experience The Coal Miner’s Daughter Museum. This 18,000-square-foot museum amasses a huge collection of personal memorabilia and awards from Loretta’s expansive career in country music along with mementos from her many beloved friends in entertainment.

Continuing on for about a three-hour drive you’ll arrive at the sprawling estate of Graceland, the home to none other than the King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis. No visit to Memphis would be complete without a stopover at Elvis Presley’s Graceland. This iconic rock and roll estate was purchased by 22-year-old Elvis on March 19, 1959 for $102,500 and is now preserved to share with the world and to help maintain Elvis’ legacy. On your tour of Graceland you’ll see the famous Jungle Room, his airplanes, and loads of memorabilia and kitsch.

Dubbed the Home of the Blues and Birthplace of Rock 'n Roll, the city of Memphis offers a rocking good time to all with an eclectic array of live music venues and foodie hotspots. And the best way to understand the importance of Memphis’ contribution to modern music is to begin your tour of the city at Sun Studio where music royalty like Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Elvis first recorded. Started in 1950 by Sam Phillips, and located just off vibrant Beale Street in downtown Memphis, Sun Studio helped give many blues and R&B performers their big shot. Sam’s assistant, Marion Keisker, was the first to see, hear, and record Elvis’s first track.

When you’re in town, make sure to stop in at Lafayette’s Music Room. During the 1970s, Lafayette’s was the place to see live shows. The establishment helped launch the careers of music superstars Billy Joel, KISS, and Barry Manilow. Today, Lafayette’s Restaurant and Bar boasts live bands seven nights a week and serves a delectable menu inspired by Southern cuisine.

THE BIG EASY

After a good night’s rest in Memphis, be sure to get up early, grab some breakfast at Elwood’s Shack, and head directly south on I-55 for about six hours. When you arrive at New Orleans’, plan to check into the exquisite JW Marriott New Orleans, set in the historic French Quarter. As a guest you’ll experience nothing less than superb service, upscale amenities, and modern luxury. The hotel is also conveniently located with easy access to Harrah's Casino, the House of Blues, and the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. When the weather’s warm, be sure to take a dip in the hotel’s rooftop saltwater pool!

After checking in, hit up the French Quarter to grab some lunch and a cool drink (Deanie’s and Johnny’s Po-Boys are a couple of personal favorites). Trust me, you’ll need the energy before you start exploring the town on foot.

Once you start soaking up the French Quarter’s the eccentric, lively, and at times, bawdy fun atmosphere, you’ll realize there’s no other place on Earth quite like it. Things really get hopping here in the evening and keep on going until the early morning hours.

New Orleans is a city that plays to the senses from its Jazz Festival to Mardi Gras and many other music festivals too numerous to list. Jazz, brass bands, and soul music can be heard everywhere from street performances to giant concert halls to small venues like the revered Preservation Hall, home to the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Established in 1961, Preservation Hall has become a haven for fans of traditional jazz with its unique old-school decor and intoxicating ambiance. Situated in the heart of the French Quarter on St. Peter Street, Preservation Hall is an intimate venue with concerts over 350 nights a year.

Another local spot to catch some of the best live musical performances is the world famous Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street in Uptown New Orleans. Here you can catch blues, funk, R&B, rock, zydeco, jazz, jam bands, and any combination thereof. Unannounced drop in celebrity artists are not uncommon (Bruce Springsteen once dropped in to jam with The Iguanas).

For a more laidback music scene, take a walk down Frenchmen Street and explore in the vibrant blocks of cafes, music clubs, and restaurants that include Snug Harbor, d.b.a. and the Spotted Cat. For an off-beat adventure, the Singing Oak is a peaceful spot with coordinated melodies from the beautiful wind chimes that hang from the giant oak located in the heart of City Park. The chimes are tuned just right for a harmonious effect that is a relaxing tinkling symphony.

And because Sunday brunch is itself an institution in the Big Easy, consider making a trip to famed Arnaud’s. Sunday brunch at Arnaud’s comes complete with a delicious Creole menu while a traveling jazz trio takes requests. For the perfect ending, order the bananas foster and watch as it is flambéed tableside. Yum!

A Modern Classic

No matter if you are setting sail on a luxury cruise or living it up in your own posh vacation villa, the islands of Greece deliver vacations thrills of epic proportions.

Rich in history, mythology, and all those colossal ancient architectural ruins, Greece is home to over 6,000 islands and islets scattered across the eastern Mediterranean. Mykonos and Rhodes are also two of the more of the popular ports in the Greek archipelago. Mykonos has an adorable, windmill–topped fishing village that gained popularity as a tourist destination in the early 1960's when shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis brought Jackie Kennedy here. It soon became an exclusive playground for the rich and famous and has been a popular haven ever since for the international crowd who enjoy its many beaches and the ruins on nearby Delos Island. According to Greek mythology, Delos was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, the twin offspring of Zeus. It is one of the most extensive and important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in all of Greece.

Marked by a number of rich cultural influences, Martinique is colorful, tropical, and very French. The north end of the island is characterized by dense forests, rivers, and waterfalls. The center of the island transitions to the south’s geologically older landscapes of rolling hills; and the southern coast is dotted with many picturesque bays and covers. Thanks to an average temperature of 79° F, Martinique is the island of the “never-ending summer.”

Martinique’s celebrated past is not only evident in its architecture, historic monuments, and museums, but in its culinary mastery too. This is where the island truly shows off its Frenchness, coupling Caribbean influences to create inspiring dishes found nowhere else. Hotels and better-known spots have menus in English, but some smaller places do not, so it’s wise to bring along a French phrase book if you want to dine like a local. Many restaurants offer both French and Creole dishes.

If you want to stay somewhere closer to home, yet feel like you’re a world away, the island of Eleuthera is fantastic. Just a stone’s throw from Florida and about 50 miles east of Nassau, Eleuthera was the first settlement in The Bahamas, founded in 1648. Of course, the island has undergone quite a bit of change since then, but you can still find many isolated beaches where you can easily escape to a blissful world of doing absolutely nothing. Essentially a pencil-thin island, Eleuthera is over 100 miles long and only two miles wide, assuring you you’re never far from the stunning white and pink-sand beaches. The landscape’s rolling green hills, dramatic cliffs, and sea-to-sea views truly make for some breathtaking sights.

The name Eluerthera is Greek for “Freedom” a fitting name for a Caribbean island that’s free from crowds, cruise ships and casinos. While the island moves at a slower pace than most visitors are accustomed to, the relaxed pace of life here, along with a varying selection of secluded villas, upscale resorts, and quaint inns, keeps visitors coming back year after year, including member of the British royal family. The island is divided between North Eleuethera and South Eleuthera. One of the most popular spots is Harbour Island on the north end, famous for its pink-tinged beaches.

Known as the “Unspoiled Queen” of the Caribbean because of its natural beauty above and below the water’s surface, Saba is a pristine island that makes visitors feel like early explorers. Located 28 miles south of St. Maarten, this small five square mile eastern Caribbean island rises nearly 3,000 feet above the sea and is cloaked in lush rainforests. Saba is the real deal for those looking for a secluded haven in peaceful and friendly surroundings. Though well versed in ecotourism, the island is relatively new to outside visitors helping it retain a low-key ambience.

The island’s brilliantly colorful coral life makes it one of the most sublime places to dive. The surrounding waters were designated as the Saba National Marine Park in 1987 and are now subject to government regulation to preserve its coral reefs and vast variety of marine life. Despite the island’s Dutch affiliation, English is the principle language spoken and the U.S. dollar is the official currency.

Marriott Raises the Bar ON Well-being and Comfort

While the new normal may evolve and change over time to reflect government guidance and new societal expectations, travelers can enjoy peace of mind knowing that Marriott has made all the necessary precautions to provide a great guest experience, time after time.

Marriott’s commitment to keeping hotel associates, guests and customers safe is their utmost priority. The company’s recently launched Global Cleanliness Council includes experts from the field of medicine and public health to supplement the hotel’s long-standing reputation of cleanliness and hospitability.

Additionally, Marriott has developed over 200 cleaning protocols throughout each step of a guest’s journey and for every physical space in the hotel. The hotel is deploying scientifically supported practices and innovations, with a focus on specific details of the guest experience.

Along with enabling and promoting social and physical distancing practices, Marriott is reducing allowable capacities in spaces, increasing distance between furniture, and managing queueing areas. Every space at Marriott will continue to undergo deeper, more frequent cleanings. Enhanced cleaning protocols have been designed to disinfect every space, especially during peak usage. All high-touch items, like elevator buttons and escalator handrails, will also be continually disinfected. Hand sanitation stations have been added throughout the hotels, including in high-traffic areas.

Marriott has gone above and beyond to help keep guests more connected with less contact. Cell phone technology includes Mobile Key, Mobile Dining, eFolio delivery, and Mobile Requests via the Marriott Bonvoy™ app. Hybrid meetings via live-streaming are also supported.

Guests rooms will receive a deep cleaning between stays and nonessential high-touch items that cannot be disinfected will be removed. Disinfecting wipes will be provided in all accommodations. To further keep contact to a minimum, there will be limited, in-stay housekeeping frequency to reduce contact during each stay.

And when it comes to food and beverage options, Marriott has also made important changes by replacing self-service buffets with a variety of “grab and go” contactless food and beverage choices. Redesigned food and beverage station set-ups now include protective barriers and non-essential items have also been removed.

SAFE SAILING with Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent’s ships have been outfitted with upgraded HVAC systems that incorporate the latest advances. Each ship will utilize fresh-air induction and be equipped with the highest-tier HEPA 13 hospital-grade filters for all accommodations and public spaces.

Each ship will have a dedicated Public Health Officer on board who is responsible for the oversight of all sanitation and outbreak prevention initiatives. Additionally, they will maintain compliance with the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program. Enhanced onboard medical centers are abundantly stocked with common prescription medications, remedies, and the latest virus-testing equipment.

Regent is constantly monitoring the global health map and will cancel or modify itineraries to impacted areas. The cruise line is also preventing guests and crew who have recently traveled to high-risk locations from boarding. Monitoring of staff and crew health includes testing of crew members, multiple temperature checks per day, as well as rigid sanitation and hygiene protocols.

Prior to boarding, all guests will undergo extensive health screenings. Regent has designed an enhanced, staggered embarkation and check-in process for proper social distancing that also includes a new state-of-the-art touchless temperature screening. Embarkation terminals will be sanitized continuously and terminals will be thoroughly sanitized and, where possible, fogged before and after each embarkation and debarkation.

For safe and healthy dining, no-touch food and beverage service is being implemented across all ships with service staff stationed ship-wide. Reduced seating in entertainment venues, smaller group sizes for shore excursions, culinary classes, and onboard activities, along with increased spacing in dining venues, provide for effective social distancing practices.

From check-in to baggage claim, SAFETY IS Delta’S TOP PRIORITY

By working in consensus with health experts, partners, and healthcare industry leaders on best practices, Delta Air Lines has implemented a dynamic lineup of measures to ensure a safe travel experience for all its customers.

Along with requiring customers and customer-facing employees to wear masks, social distance markers have been added throughout check-in lobbies, Delta Sky Club check-ins, at the gates, and down the jet bridges to encourage customers to stand apart. Plexiglass shields have been installed at all Delta check-in counters, in Delta Sky Clubs, and at the gate counters across the globe. Hand sanitizer stations are available in check-in lobbies, at the gates, in Delta Sky Clubs, and on all Delta-owned jet bridges.

Delta’s check-in lobbies, self-service kiosks, gate counters, and baggage claim are thoroughly wiped down continually throughout the day. Electrostatic spraying is being utilized in all of the airports Delta serves in the U.S. and has been expanded to other key locations such as Delta’s lobbies, jet bridges, and gatehouses.

Delta Sky Clubs are offering pre-packaged food similar to onboard snacks and other pre-packaged options like yogurt, breakfast energy bars, salads, hummus and pita chips, and sandwiches. Coffee, tea, soft drinks and select wine, beer and liquor remain available.

Every Delta flight is thoroughly sanitized prior to boarding using electrostatic sprayers. Following this, cleaning crews complete an extensive checklist of cleaning procedures using this same high-grade disinfectant to wipe down personal and common areas of the cabin.

The air line’s new boarding process encourages more space for safer travel by boarding all flights from back-to-front, reducing the instances of customers needing to pass by one another to reach their seats. The new process is limited to 10 customers at a time to minimize your contact with others.

All middle seats will continue to be shown as unavailable or not assignable when selecting seats via the Fly Delta app or online. The airline will also continue to block the selection of some aisle seats in aircraft with 2x2 seating configurations. The air on all aircraft is completely recirculated 10 to 30 times per hour with fresh, outside air or through industrial-grade HEPA filters, which extract more than 99.99% of particles, including viruses.

Guests can further their touchless Delta check-in procedure by downloading the Fly Delta app to access a digital boarding pass.

Having been hidden behind the Iron Curtain until the end of the Cold War, and then embroiled in the Croatian War of Independence with Yugoslavia until 1995, Croatia has become one of the hottest travel destinations in the Mediterranean with a total of 19.6 million tourists visiting in 2019.

The Epic And Unforgettable

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go on a world voyage? There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when you load up the car, leave all your cares behind, and head out on the open road in search of new adventures. And while there are plenty of opportunities for self-guided travel across the globe, few destinations come as close to satisfying an avid trekker’s insatiable appetite more than a road trip through the Emerald Isle.

Ireland’s stunning scenery, including vast areas of unspoiled landscape and breathtaking seascapes, draws travelers from around the world and is a very good reason why it’s considered by many to be one of the most beautiful destinations on Earth. BEHIND THE WHEEL

The Republic of Ireland offers the longest uninterrupted coastal road trip on the planet with its 1,553-mile-long Wild Atlantic Way. Skirting Ireland’s entire west coast and parts of its north and south coasts through nine counties and three provinces, the Wild Atlantic Way is a journey of a lifetime. To enjoy it fully can take two to three weeks with hundreds of reasons to stop and explore along the way. Stunning vistas, natural wonderments, deserted windswept beaches and awe-inspiring sunsets greet you in passing, while enchanting towns and seaside villages entice you to hang for a while with their enjoyable mix of shops, traditional pubs, and splendid seafood restaurants.

Doolin, in County Clare, with its thatched roof cottages, welcoming pubs, and famous Irish traditional music scene, is one of the most popular villages on the west coast. Gus O’Connor’s Pub, established here in 1832, is one of the world’s most iconic Irish pubs. Doolin is also a popular launching point for the many travelers that flock to the Cliffs of Moher each year. Though less than 15 minutes by car, the ferry service at Doolin Pier sails below the cliffs and is one of the best ways to witness their majestic rise from the ocean’s floor.

Dozens of lighthouses up and down the western coast signal days gone by when ship wrecks were aplenty. Fanad Head Lighthouse, perched at the tip of the Fanad Peninsula, is at the northern most part of Ireland and one of the world’s most beautiful lighthouses. Far to the south, near the end of Wild Atlantic Way, Fastnet Lighthouse precariously sits off the Atlantic coast, high atop remote Fastnet Rock and is Ireland’s most southern point.Like the lighthouses, towering mystic castles (dozens upon dozens of them) dot the landscape along Wild Atlantic Way. Some are tucked away, others standing in full view, tall and proud: King John’s Castle, Donegal Castle, Ashford Castle, Ross Castle, and Blarney Castle of Blarney Stone fame, just to name a few!

SHORT ON TIME?

Fortunately, for those of us with limited vacation time, shorter segments of Wild Atlantic Way hold legendary status all of their own. The most popular scenic drive in Ireland, the 111-mile Ring of Kerry, is a circular route in County Kerry that runs along the coastline of picturesque Iveragh Peninsula in south-western Ireland. A jewel of Ireland, panoramic views of the Ring or Kerry’s pristine beaches, majestic mountains, rugged and verdant coastlines, historic castles, medieval ruins, rural seaside villages, and the island-dotted Atlantic await.

Killarney National Park is hands down the top attraction of the Ring of Kerry with its miles of walking trails, sparkling lakes, thundering waterfalls, towering mountains and dense forests. Be sure to check out the park’s 15th-century Ross Castle, Muckross Abbey, as well as Muckross House and Gardens with its magnificent lakeside setting.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Before you begin your journey, keep the following tips in mind. All vehicles in Ireland travel on the left-hand side of the road. Signposts in Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) areas are written in Gaelic. Other areas are in Gaelic and English. A valid national driving license or international driving permit, third-party auto insurance, and seat belt use is required. Driving while using a cell phone or under the influence of alcohol or drugs is prohibited, with both carrying hefty fines.

Ireland is still largely a rural country even with its many new, high-speed motorways. Rural traffic is the norm, so vigilance is key, especially around curves, to avoid slow-moving farm machinery, farm animals, and wildlife crossing the road. Last but not least, gas stations can be few and far between. Almost none offer 24/7-service, and not all accept credit cards, so keep plenty of Euros on hand and refill once your tank is half empty.

With travel on the minds of so many of us these days, it’s no surprise that we could all use some serious time away to stretch our legs and reenergize our minds. Whether it’s getting out for a day hike or spending a week out on the trail, the physical and mental health benefits of hiking are just an added bonus to witnessing Mother Nature’s own artistry.

THE MAJESTIC CANADIAN ROCKIES

As hiking and exploring national parks across the globe continues to grow in popularity, vacationers are flocking to destinations like Canada’s Banff National Park in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. Established in 1885 as a railroad tourist destination, it’s also Canada’s oldest national park. Banff encompasses 2,564 square miles of mountainous terrain, with many glaciers and ice fields, dense coniferous forest, and alpine landscapes. With over 994 miles of maintained trails, Banff National Park offers some of the best hiking on the planet, whether an easy hike to incredible vistas or more strenuous treks deep in the backcountry.

A two-hour drive from Calgary, the park’s main commercial center is the small town of Banff, in the Bow River valley. Rushing rivers, snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and glacially-carved cirques make the wilderness surrounding the town a popular destination for hikers. Trails lace the Banff area, ranging from low-elevation strolls to more strenuous full-day outings that lead to some of the best alpine passes in the Canadian Rockies.

While Banff National Park might hold the title as Canada’s best hiking destination, it doesn’t hold exclusive rights throughout the North American continent. That claim remains up for debate, with plenty of competition south of the border in the western U.S.

THE WILD WEST

Southeast of Banff, some 341 miles, Glacier National Park in Montana encompasses more than 1,545 square miles in two sub-ranges of the Rockies. Called the “Crown of the Continent,” its topography, like Banff’s, includes alpine meadows, deep forests, soothing waterfalls, more than 50 glaciers, 200 sparkling lakes, 1,000 plant species, and hundreds of animal species. With over 700 miles of managed trails, it too is a hiker’s paradise. Grinnell Glacier Trail offers some of the best views of the park’s primitive and unspoiled beauty, as well as the rapidly disappearing Grinnell Glacier.

On the West Coast, California’s John Muir Trail, a 215 mile-long section of the much larger 2,653-mile Pacific Crest Trail that runs from just north of the Canadian/U.S. border to Mexico, has been described as “America’s most famous trail.” Scaling the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, passing through Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Park, it has a total elevation gain of 47,000 feet and for most of its length, the trail is in the High Sierra backcountry and wilderness areas. Passing through large swaths of alpine and high mountain scenery, John Muir Trail lies almost entirely at or above 8,000 feet in elevation. It’s panoramic, picture-postcard views are world-famous, providing a lifetime of memories.

Zion National Park in Utah, distinguished by Zion Canyon’s steep red cliffs, is one of the world's best places for canyoneering, the sport of descending slender canyons. The national park invites adventurers to lower into fantastic watery slots and river-filled canyons that range from strenuous hiking and wading to technical challenges with swimming and rappelling. Forest trails along the Virgin River lead to the Emerald Pools, with their waterfalls and a hanging garden. Also along the river, partly through deep chasms, the Zion Narrows becomes a wading hike when 600-foot canyon walls close in, making the Virgin River your only trail.

Other popular hiking trails in the western U.S. to consider include Yosemite National Park’s Half Dome Trail, the epic Lost Coast Trail in California’s King Range National Conservation Area, and South Kaibab Trail in Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park.

WANDERN IN GERMANY

The recent boom in hiking’s popularity is not limited to North America however, with outdoor activities taking center stage around the world. In Germany, wandern (hiking) has been a passion of its people for centuries, with 68% of Germans hitting the trails in 2019. In fact, May 14th has been Germany’s National Day of Hiking since 1883. Home to 124,274 miles of sign-posted trails, from high-altitude treks in the Bavarian Alps to woodland hikes in the Black Forest, hiking has been Germany’s most popular outdoor activity for decades.

Blessed with an abundance of varied landscapes perfect for hiking, Germany boasts over 53,000 trails for hikers of all abilities. The Rheinsteig, a 193 mile, 23-stage trail, is one of Germany’s most famous. The route follows the east bank of the Rhine River from Wiesbaden to Bonn. The upper middle Rhine Valley, with its density of castles and views of steeply sloping vineyards, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002 and the opportunity to sample from Germany’s wine-making region along the way only adds to its popularity.
